drama

not so much drama here but more drama on the home front. rach has been in some trouble in regards to being sick and calling in sick so many times to work that she's just done some research into have glandula fever (she had it late last year) and found that it stays in your system for up to 12 months (duh). that's not the drama part. that part is that mum apparently had a complete fit this morning when she found out that rach wasn't going to work again. rachel said it wasn't yelling, more screaming. i've heard mum yell, but not scream. that's going to another planet really if she screamed. plus i spoke to rach on the weekend and she seems to be really struggling with mum and dad constantly picking at her, am worried about how she is because i have had that for most of my life and have a very think skin, but am not sure if she can hold out for another 3 months before i'm home. don't think she has any other option though, apart from breakdown.
here things have been fine. am planning a trip up the the "troll capital of the world" on sunday so am excited about that. the weekend just gone i went downtown on sunday, didn't end up scrapbooking, and checked out the christmas decorations, was a lovely afternoon and evening (both weather wise and just trolling without much purpose) and managed to cross out a couple of things on my "must see" list. it's a mental list by the way, i didn't actually write one out. wouldn't be a bad idea but also am not going too.
just realised i forgot about this so ending it now!

Oh man

The last few days have been go go go. Wednesday we went to the Lincoln Park zoo. A pretty cool place considering it's free. Saw a quite a few animals, quite a few weren't on display. Ended up with migraine, bad enough that when we came home and I put myself to bed I ended up getting up again to vomit. Not the worst experience, but didn't make my head feel any better.

Thursday I woke super early, 6am without an alarm. And I'd been awake a few times through the night, god only knows why but I did. Checked my VTAC app and had my suspicions confirmed, RMIT doesn't offer early round offers so I have to wait until Jan 15 to find out if I was accepted into uni. Was a bit bummed. Pat, the kids and I headed off to the Thanksgiving parade downtown by 7:30am and got there just as the blow up turkey was going past so we caught the beginning. Was pretty cool. I really enjoy parades. Em was especially enjoying it and I'm lucky everyone lasted as long as they did so the only major thing I think I ended up missing was Santa Clause. It was interesting to see schools from Ohio, Texas and Florida there, I didn't realise the parade was so big. After that we came home and I got myself ready to go back towards the city to Pat's sister's for Thanksgiving dinner. Was a hilarious night, I had a great time, Pat's family are so nice and the kids did a really good job of behaving.

Today Pat hit the stores early (5am, when most opened...) and I stayed here sleeping. It's like our equilivent to the Boxing Day sales, but this is pretty much is major and minor store with everything in between opening up and having haords of people through the doors within an hour. I heard feet above me just before 8am and had a sudden thought that they were looking for Pat so rushed upstairs to find Em very content and Pat back. I got dressed and ventured out. I bought what I wanted, a 2GB USB for $25, saving me $55 and then decided to look at the other stores. Ended up with Jarhead and Brokeback Mountain for $4.99 each, then I went somewhere else and got The Sweetest Thing for $2.99 and the first season of My Name is Earl for dad for $18.99 (bargain!). I wasn't as hardcore as most people though and couldn't actually be bothered to venture into the mall. I might attack it later this evening but don' actually want to buy anything so might not bother. Some people had been waiting since 4am in the morning. That to me is crazy. All the digital cameras at Circuit City had either been put away or had all been sold. The carparks were full, I was thankful that I'd been lucky getting good parking and also not having to wait in lines forever. Shopping like that isn't my thing. But I am happy with what I bought and how I didn't buy things which were more than I'd wanted to buy.

So that's me for the time being. Am going to have a nap and do some scrapbooking this arvo. Tomorrow I'm off downtown to check out some of the Christmas decorations going on and Sunday I'm off to make a 2007 Organiser at Archivers for $10 so figr eI'll scrapbook all Sunday as well.

Thanksgiving week

Having learnt about Thanksgiving via Alex's homework maybe a month or two ago I understand why people give thanks on this day. So I've decided to celebrate by writing a list of all the things I am thankful for, silly or heartfelt. And in no specific order.
1. My family. Growing up and leaving home really sealed my love and appreciation I have for my mum, dad and sister. Plus my grandparents. For all they've done to support me I just hope I can bring my kids up the way my parents did me (I don't think having a mini me would be all that bad). NB: This is actually my number one. From here on in it's no specific order.
2. My friends. Oh my god my friends and the crazy moments we've had. People have crazy moments but I really think crazy moments really follow me around. My friends for loving me, for putting up with me and thinking I am the best in the world (ok, I did a little interpreting of your feelings for me...). And that is old friends and new, the people who keep me sane and keep calling me because I'm lazy and can't be bothered to find my phone to call them.
3. Relaxed speed laws in the state of Illinois. Otherwise I couldn't cruise along at the speed I am comfortable at (75 miles an hour, it's like we have a cosmic connection, always finding one another on the interstate).
4. My host family. For making me go insane but providing me with a sanctuary to do it in!!! No, they've really showed me another way of life and given me a lot of love.
5. Dale Woo, aka the Daewoo. That car, as much money as it kept demanding and however hot it was, got me from A to B everytime except once and that once was my fault and between me and him, I take full responsibility for it. Plus he's a tank, he's smacked into a few cars here and there. And I might be saying goodbye to him when I go home (Dad still loves him and Rach likes him too).
6. America. If one day I forget who I really am I'll think back to my time here because the time here I've been 100% myself. It's an amazing country, one I'd very happily accept adoption from.
7. Coke. Without it I'd have probably fallen asleep at inappropriate times over the last 4 years.
8. Food. If I liked different kinds I'd probably like a career in taste testing. The flavours and the textures thrill me. I'm majorly into Key Lime Pie at the moment.
9. Music. For making me happy and expressing my feelings even when I'm unaware of feeling that way.
10. Email. Oh goodness, email. MSN. Where would I have been these last 6 years? The things I'd have missed out on.
11. My teddy. Poor teddy has been squashed into suitcases and packs, searched by a gloved lady in Tampa, FL, forgotten in a car once (and only once, when I was like 4), moved from house to house with me and he still loves me. He's my security blanket and I'm not ashamed to say he's come all over America with me (except D.C, wasn't there for long enough, but worried about the house burning down with him in it all weekend). It's a weird and freakish thing maybe but I struggle to sleep without knowing he's in bed with me.

And that's all I can think of right now. I am generaly thankful for everything. But that's the stuff which I have com to think, I am so thankful for this.
Hoping everyone has a lovely week, celebrating Thanksgiving or not.

And the light shines in

I finally worked out why I love The OC as much as I do. Ryan. I don't find him overly attractive but there is something about the character which captivates me. That is why I'm happy to spend hundreds on getting the seasons. If he'd died last season instead of Marissa then I think I would've given up on the show. So glad I figured out that obsession. Next!
Feeling not to flash, have the beginnings of a migraine so after I eat I'm going to go to bed as I start work at 7am - ugh. But did just go out and blow $120 in an hour. Found a cheap feather and down winter coat for $36, bought a U of I hoodie for $20 and then a pair of Dickies jeans for $58. The rest was tax. Have that guilty feeling and the only thing I can think to return is the jacket but want to wait until I speak to mum, she suggested I buy a good coat.
Haven't heard from Sarah about going to the museum on Sunday. Think I might give it a miss if she and Lara can't go and wait til next weekend as I will probably have both days off, so I could spend both days downtown. So I would spend Sunday Christmas shopping for mum and dad and scrapbooking.
That's about it from me for now, got credit today, I hate the fact that if you don't have money on your phone you also can't recieve calls or messages, I know I missed on from Michelle so am wondering who else I did.
Have a good weekend.

The week is flying.
Didn't get to LCC meeting last night, tonsils swelled and was so tired, almost fell asleep while eating dinner. In saying that Karen was fine when I originally told her but then I get this email today which pissed me off, talking about if she relaxs the rules for one person attendance will start dropping, that I should have notified her earlier and the valid excuses for not being at a meeting. So I wrote back, trying to control my anger, and very coldly pointed out that if I had advance warning of my tonsils swelling, cold chills freezing me and tiredness taking control then I would have let her know. And then pointed out that if I went then I'd get sick like I did the last time at the fire safety meeting. I'm sure no one's interested in this but I was pissed and had no one to talk to about it. I told Pat and she sympathised which made me feel a little better.
Anyway, oh so!! Spoke to Chantelle on Tuesday who gave me the all clear to book our tickets for Feb!! Which means she's coming over!!! Am so excited. Was a sweet deal because I'd checked the Air Tran website on Monday night and found the tickets were about $100 cheaper because they were having a 48 hour sale, which was why I called her. So the next trip is flying from Milwaukee to Orlando, hitting Disneyworld and Kennedy Space Center/Centre and then catching an overnight bus up to Atlanta, spending a few days there seeing the world of Coca Cola (I couldn't miss seeing it) and the Georgia Aquarium and whatever else takes our fancy, nd then flying to San Fran. In 12 weeks I'll be in Orlando!!!
Kids wise things have been so so. Matthew told me I was his favourite au pair tonight, I think he agreed I was one of the strictest the other night... Nice to have him say that though. Emily smacked a girl in the face at library today so we promptly left, ended up going to the mall because we hadn't been out of the house for that long. Wandered around Marshalls, or I did, Emily ran up and down the aisles. Was quite funny and I was in no rush so didn't mind. And Alex has been tired and not in the best moods, I remind her I'm not feeling well and suddenly she's like an angel!!! I don't understand it either.
Missing home at the moment, don't know if I've posted about this yet. It started when I went away, feel like I could get teary if I think about wanting to speak to home for too long. But I opened the suitcase and am now throwing stuff in it because I no longer need it. I am using this because I'm hoping it'll clear off surfaces in my room. So far not really working...
Ugly Betty, The OC and Shark are on tonight so am off to get myself ready for that.

Here it is... Hope you're comfy.

Saturday and Sunday - NYC
Started off with being completely screwed around thanks to US Airways. Their terrible customer service far outweighs the nice planes. I selected and paid for a 6am flight, hence waking up at 2:30 and not going back to sleep. I get to the airport and somehow my luggage and I am supposed to get on an 8:35am flight. It wasn't even 6am and my day started off bad. So after getting quite pissed, being told my luggage was not able to be on the 6am flight with me and that I, not the airline, would have to pay to get it to me on the other end. I won't dwell on this issue because it put me in a terrible mood and has the ability to do so now. Finally got to NYC, caught a Super Shuttle to the hostel, swear I could've been killed, felt like I was in India or something because people drove all over the road, no thinking the lines for the lanes for there for a reason. Caught up with Lozz and Jas - YAY! That was fun. We headed to the Subway, number 1 Red Line. Went down to Times Square and on our Hop On Hop Off bus. We paid $48 for the whole weekend of it and used it once, am still debating whether it was worth it. I mean it was worth it, but I'd recommend just going into Times Square and looking for the Grayline people in red and buying a ticket, might be cheaper. We got off in Chinatown, now this part was unbelievable. Jas kept talking about these fake designer bags, and I was thinking fake like Vic Markets fake, oh so obviously cheap and tacky. So I wasn't too interested. We jump off the bus, cross the street and I'm walking away hen Lozz calls out and tells me to stop, we turn around and Jas is talking to a little Chinese (I assume he was, could've been Korean, no idea really, he definitely wasn't Japanese or Malaysian or Thai or from the Asia close to Aus) man. Suddenly we're following him up two blocks and across one block and down a flight of stairs. On this journey I was imagining walking into a room full of cops and being arrested and wondering what excuse I would use but then when we got into the room, at first I thought it was little, that was until I saw about 10 others, with handbags ALL over the walls. Fakes that looked completely real. I found the one Rach wants, so bought her that. It's the Dior saddle bag, found out in Vegas it costs about $895. Paid $30. Jas bought a bag and so did Lozz. But I saw a 'Gucci' one in there I really liked but didn't want to get it, thinking I might stop thinking about it... After that Jas still had bags to get so we went into the backs of all these other places, it was insane. So many conspicuous black plastic bags being carried around by people. After this adventure we got back on the bus again, sitting up top and completely freezing our arses off until I couldn't take it any longer and had to go downstairs. Once we got back to Times Square we found out Olive Garden was a 2 hour wait, maybe it 1, don't remember. So we went to TGI Friday's. Now I love Friday's but this Friday's was THE WORST I'd been too. The food was dry, ridiculously priced and they didn't bring out water. Wasn't a good first American meal for Lozz. After this we headed bag to hostel where Lozz's bags had arrived (at least hers were sent to her) and then headed on to the airport to pick up my bag, cost me $60, am writing a letter of complaint tonight.
We got up super early on Sunday and got the Subway down to Grand Central. We worked out the Subway, am quite pleased about that, but I couldn't work out my direction most of the time which annoyed me. Grand Central was just like the movies. Am bummed because my pics didn't turn out so well there. Am going to go through Lozz's to see what hers are like. From here we headed down to the Staten Island Ferry and saw a free view of the Statue of Liberty. We walked up to Battery Park where we all bought so nice pictures not framed and saw a turkey, yes a turkey, which apparently didn't belong to anybody, wandering around the park. We went to the Sphere and saw that - it's the globe which was damaged in 9/11 but not destroyed which has been moved to Battery Park. Very battered though. From here we walked up to the WTC Site. So much work has gone on there since I was there at the beginning of Feb. I was surprised. They're still finding remains. Tower 7 has already been re-built and the glass material they used on it is actually quite beautiful, looks almost transparent. The building that has had the black covering on it is now in the process of being de-constructed floor by floor, and again, more remains are still being found.

After this we went back to Chinatown for that handbag I wanted, plus a handbag for Lozz's mum, my mum and Jas wanted a wallet or two. Finding that little man was near impossible but just as I was about to give up I found him!!! Was so excited I think I screamed. Oh and we walked up a million flights of steps. The places we went on the Sunday for handbags were even more crazy than the day before.
From here we hightailed it back to 58th and 5th where the Pulitzer Fountain can be found, one of the entrances to Central Park, where the NYC marathon was nearing the finishing line and where we met our tour guide for the Sex and the City tour. Was a good tour. Just some facts, Carrie's apartment is actually located on Perry St in Greenwich Village (correct me if I'm wrong Lozz) where you can occasionally catch a stop sign in the background, a dead give away it isn't uptown and is actually downtown. Oh, we went to a sex shop too! That was something to write home about, actually I think I did... Anyway, oh and we had AWESOME cupcakes - to die for. Would go back just for another. We also saw Samantha's door and where she fell down in the episode when Smith was trying to hold her hand. Smith's hot. Anyway, that was a good tour. Afterwards we rushed back to the hostel to get Jas's stuff and then to Grand Central to see her off. Lozz and I walked down to Times Square to get some more pics, soak up the atmosphere and say goodbye to New York City.

Monday - On the way to Vegas
Discovered the best airline in USA, or the best yet and I've flown on majority of them. Delta. Not a flight was delayed, they gave me snacks on the flight from Cincinnati to Vegas and my luggage was already on the conveyor by the time I got there. My whole Monday was pretty much spent in airports. Lozz and I picked up the rental car, had a nervous moment. We chose a PT Cruiser and packed it with our luggage and I was going to drive, we thought we were safe for me to do so (I wasn't supposed to because I wasn't on the contract, would've cost about $25 extra a day I think). And suddenly we round the corner and there's a bloody check point of the vehicle, the contract and drivers license! I jumped out of the car, wondering what the fuck I was going to do plus having no idea where I'd put my handbag and license when the guy says we need a California registered car, so while he wasn't looking Lozz and I quickly switched spots in the car, he didn't notice a thing and she had her first experience driving in American by reversing back. Almost crapped myself. Swapped cars, sat in the passenger seat and headed out of the airport, still quite nervous. But the airport is like right there, next to The Strip. So we were very quickly on Las Vegas Blvd, cruising down. I think I resembled a kid in a candy shop, the lights were so dazzling. Got our way to the hostel, again, not in the best area but we had a shower in our room and only two other girls were in there which was sweet. Headed out to have a look around, caught the water and sound show at Bellagio 3 times, I could've stayed all night, it was incredible, I like water though. During this time Lozz's friend Hailey, her husband Jeremy and their kid Luke showed up and they invited up for brekky the next morning.

Tuesday - Las Vegas
Accepted offer for breakfast then headed back to the strip where we went into MGM, Excalibur, New York New York and took pics of the Monte Carlo. After this we checked out Coke World Las Vegas and then headed off in search of a good buffet. We were too late for lunch so wanted to know the dinner times, first we went to Terrible's, recommended by the Austrian girls in our room and then down to Sam's Town, which I'd seen on $40 a day on the Food Network. After finding out they both started at about 4:30 we went to Target, not the best one but I bought the Laguna Beach CD, we bought snacks for the drive the following day and checked out the clothes. Headed back to Sam's Town for our buffet. Think I'm like my father... Had 3 main plates, but I admit I took little amounts of different foods then only ate a little amount, and ate slowly. Then had Key Lime Pie - oh my god, delicious, I was the recipe, for dessert and then a piece of cheesecake. Was so full. Lozz wasn't feeling her best so we stopped at Walgreens then went back to the hostel to freshen up. We went up the Stratosphere, 109 floors above the ground... The view was good but not great, it's around the bend from the main action of the strip of you miss getting really awesome pics, but still nice to be up there. Soon enough the casino's will be right out there so there won't be anything to miss. From here we drove down and parked somewhere else and walked up to Treasure Island, just missing the last show for the night, played one slot in there and caught the free monorail/tram thing to The Mirage (next door, but a long walk) where we saw the volcano explode, awesome. We walked to The Bellagio to put a $1 in the slots and maybe have a drink, I was tired and Lozz still wasn't feeling great so no drinks, but we checked out the expensive designer shops. We headed back to the car, down the Strip to get a pic of the Fabulous Las Vegas sign and on to the hostel.

Wednesday - Drive to San Diego
Had an awesome sleep, Vegas was where we had the best sleeps, something about the beds probably. Packed up the car (bumped my head, painful) and drove out of Vegas, haded to Lake Mead. Beautiful. Here we discovered if we headed to the Grand Canyon it would add an extra 4 hours to the drive so, we decided not to do it - does that seem crazy?? Instead I plotted our route, we headed down to Hoover Dam, across into Nevada (after crossing through a border patrol) and headed down Nevada Highway 95. Stopped at Kingman, a route 66 town for lunch and continued on, heading south through Nevada. It was desert. Beautiful but by about 4pm I was getting tired of desert. We got onto I-8 to cross into California and passed through 3 separate border patrols. Saw a bust on the interstate, was a major highlight of the day, 4 cop cars had pulled over 1 pick up and about 10 guys were on the ground kneeling with their hands cuffed behind them.
My trusty map got us into San Diego and I'd memorised the directions (I rock!!), which was lucky because Lozz had dozed off. Found the room in the hostel to be covered in someone else's crap. Was not happy. I swear Lozz was contemplating stealing their iPod. We stayed in the Historic Gaslamp District, the party area. Had an issue with parking which we sorted out before heading back and going to sleep.

Thursday - Day trip to Tijuana
We woke up and took the car to the post office, sent home some postcards and shipped the handbag to mum and some extra clothes of mine back to me here because I had too much stuff. Or thought I did. We found another car park, walked up to the "trolley" (tram) and caught it to the U.S/Mexican border. You literally just walk into Mexico. And don't bother exchanging cash if you're only going into Tijuana, they prefer U.S $$. We spent a few hours there, had a liquid lunch of tequila and Corona. Was a bit light headed after that. Got suckered into spending money much easier. Must be their ploy. It was a crazy insane place which made me laugh, fun to visit. Lined up to cross back in America, tight security, was nervous, thank god I'd had the visa form signed for re-entry because that was the vital part, like everyone had said. That night we decided to have an awesome meal. And awesome it was. Mouth watering food from Dakota on 5th, just up from the hostel. Ended up costing over $100 Aus and $70 US. Steaks and potatoes. Yum. Then we walked it off by finding the mall, checked that out, Lozz bought perfume. Then we went to the Ghiradelli Chocolate and Ice Cream Shop for desert. Oh my god, was so yum. I couldn't finish my coke I was so full. I think I was still full the next morning, but wanted another one of those sundae's.

Friday - Seaworld

Got there early on an awesome sunny day. Caught the show with Shamu first, still am not quite sure which whale was Shamu, plus I think of him as Free Willy, I did see Free Willy, I knew who he was because of the curl in the fin. I can't be sure if they're even called fins on whales. Anyway, after that we saw the seals being fed, crazy sea gull almost stole my camera, I took a pic just at the moment it swooped it and got it's wing. We saw the dolphin and sat in the soak zone, but I only got 2 drops of water on me, we did sit like quite a few rows up in the soak zone... We had lunch after that, not much was open, was a bit disappointing. We then went to the 4-D picture show, was good, it was good. Then we went to the seal show. I love seals. They remind me of waterproof dogs. I loved this show. It was my favourite. I think Lozz said it was her fav too. After this we saw the Flamingo's, sharks, aquarium and finished off with the beluga whales and polar bears. Didn't go out. Kind of wish I did but would've spent more money and was so exhausted.

Saturday - Up the Southern California Coast

Left early, thank god, for the last leg of the trip, up to L.A for Lozz's next accommodation at Venice Beach and my flight back to Chicago on the red eye. We stopped at Pacific Beach first. San Diego made me want to apply for a green card but Pacific Beach made me want to live there now! Only problem was the smog cover and that was everywhere. Oh we saw the U.S.S Midway too but too hard to stop because they were setting up for the Veteran's Day parade. We got off the interstate and headed up the Pacific Coast Hwy through Laguna, had to do that because I love Laguna Beach. Then into Newport. I really doubt much of The OC is actually filmed there, even the pier is different, the pier on the show is wood, this one was cement. Still cool and I got a T-Shirt saying Newport Beach. From here we got stuck in traffic, lost looking for the hostel and my patience ran out. Wasn't concerned about missing my flight as I didn't have to be at the airport until 7pm. We got there spot on 6pm. Said goodbye, wasn't sad because as of Saturday it was 12 weeks until my next adventure then home!!
Speaking of which, I have to call Chany now, wake her up and tell her about the cheap tickets I found down to Orlando.
Hope this didn't bore you. I attached some pics for you!! If you want to see more let me know and I'll send you the Ringo link when I add them.

Going away

So my time has come for another vacation, thank god after the last couple of days. Am completely exhausted so the first few days in New York will be interesting...

The itinerary goes like this:

Fly out to NYC on 6am flight tomorrow.

Fly out to Vegas on Monday, hiring/renting a car

Drive over to San Diego via Grand Canyon on Wednesday

Drive up to L.A on Saturday for my flight back to Chicago (overnight flight)

Have just discovered my cigarettes have gone AWOL so am going to go to Target (to return cable ties, am going to tell you why I have them) and Walgreens (the cigarettes). And not in that order either.

Ok, back. Lozz has had a bag lost somewhere between Edinburgh and Washington D.C and missed her connecting flight so I'm now calling the hostel to say she's going to be late. I hope our vacation doesn't go this way for the whole time and it's just her who has the glitch.

Now, about the cable ties... It's an interesting story, it really is. No some people know that I probably am not a person very suited to hostels and backpacking as such, I'm more of a hotel person with complimentry soaps and stuff, with my own bathroom and maids. But because of lack of money we're staying in hostels, which is fine, really, I don't plan on not enjoying it but I did want to take serious precaution in regards to my luggage and keeping my belongings safe so today I went to Target and found cable ties, a whole 650 of them, it was the only ones they had so I had no option in getting less. And I also bought a combination lock. The cable ties cost $6.41 with tax (I found this out when I returned them...) and when I got home I decided against the idea of tying my zippers together with them. Figure I'll just take out all my favourite and important belongings and lock them away. Plus, 650 would mean I'd have to go through about 100 a day, not going to happen and on top of that, I'd have to either carry scissors or keep them somewhere so I can keep cutting my bag open. Really, it all seemed a bit dramatic. That's the cable ties story.

Am completely fucked. It's currently 5:38pm and I need to shower and do all that, zip up my bag, might even put it in the car tonight and be in bed, hopefully asleep, by 8pm. Shouldn't be too hard considering I woke at 6:30am this morning just for the hell of it apparently. And the 8am starts killed me this week.

Oh, and I also found out the NYC marathon is being ran this weekend, which would be great, if I hadn't paid $90 in tour tickets on buses. Am praying and hoping to god the services aren't disrupted because of the thing.

Am now going to finish getting ready, need to pack a pair of shorts cause Vegas looks like it's going to be warm!!!! So, will probably not post til next weekend but I said the same thing when I went to Florida, D.C and I assume I did when I went away in August and ended up posting so check back if you're interested, but, just a tip if I'm paying for it I probably won't be posting much.

Hope everyone has an awesome week, email me if you want, that's the first thing I check when I'm online.

Love Kel

p.s. pic is of the pumpkin I carved, good job huh??
